Situated on the Peloponnese Peninsula is the second largest ski resort in Greece - Kalavryta. The ski center of Kalavryta is very popular among skiers and for winter holidays in Greece due to its excellent slopes and rich history. It is located 14km away from the town of Kalavryta and 90km away from the city of Patras. The total length of the routes sum up to 20km. Their attractiveness comes from the variety of complexity - from very easy to very difficult. There are “green”, "blue", "red" and "black" pistes. There are trails, where the start is "black" and the end "green", but this "black start" is so steep that the machines which are preparing the snow have to be fixed by a winch. This route is the most difficult one in Greece. There is a "red" track of 2300m, which has a "blue" sequel, forming together one of the longest runs in Greece of 3200m. The center is open from December to April and has twelve tracks, seven lifts, restaurants, cafes, parking, a ski rental and a school for beginners. There are two big wide tracts with suitable slopes for beginners. The tracks are located at an altitude of 1700m (the lowest point of the resort) up to 2340m above sea level. After a skiing tour you can visit a wide selection of cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy delicious local food. Saturday night the track "Danae" offers night skiing, accompanied by a fascinating show and fireworks. The center also operates a snowboard park, based on the model of the Austrian park, and a snowmobile for special guided tours on the mountain slopes. Fans of more extreme hobbies can participate in paragliding, mountain climbing and other kinds of sports.
Near the village of Kalavryta is the monastery of Agia Lavra. It is of importance because there began the struggle for independence of the Greeks against the Turks, and the Greek flag was raised there for the first time. Also not far from Kalavryta at an altitude of 900m above sea level there is another monastery - Mega Spileo, which looks like carved into the rock. The monastery kept the famous icon of the Virgin Mary made by St. Luke, frescoes, manuscripts, fragments of relics of saints and other valuable relics.
Not far from Kalavryta are underground lakes situated in caves which fascinate with their stalactites, stalagmites and waterfalls of incredible beauty. And somewhere here begins the way to the mythical and mysterious river Styx, leading to the forbidden underworld...
